DRIVING

Port Canaveral lies just north of the city of Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic coast of Florida. The nearest major city is Orlando 50 miles to the west and has excellent access along State Roads 528 and A1A.  If coming from north or south of Cape Canaveral, I-95 offers access.

Driving times from nearby major cities are:

  • Jacksonville: 2.25 hours (160 miles)
  • Orlando: 50 minutes (55 miles)
  • Miami: 3 hours (215 miles)

If you want to park at the port, check out the options here; if you prefer to arrive the night before, check out these hotels which will let you park your car during your cruise if you stay the night.

FLYING

The nearest city to Port Canaveral is Orlando, FL which is served by Orlando International Airport:

Orlando International Airport (Code: MCO)

The main airport in Orlando – Orlando International Airport – is located 45 miles west of Port Canaveral and 10 miles south-east of Orlando.

TAXI

With the airport located a distance from the port, a taxi will be an expensive option and we advise smaller groups of cruise passengers to use one of the cheaper options available. But if you are a larger group, prices can be competitive with other options. If you want the luxury of a private transfer, the companies below can all accommodate you.

Offering everything from sedans for 4 people to vans for 10, Trans Cour Limo Service should be able to meet your transport needs

To compare a couple of different options Orlando Shuttle Service provides quotes for several different services for you to choose from.

Pinpoint Transportation can provide private transfers for between one and 14 cruise passengers.

SHUTTLE

Port Canaveral has plenty of choices for shuttles from the airport to the cruise terminal. The table below shows prices for each airport, per person, return.

Because these prices are per person return, whereas private car prices are per car, a couple can save money this way; however, a family could be better off with an Uber or Lyft, which also means you aren’t sharing the vehicle with other cruisers.

CAR RENTAL

Renting a car for just a few hours is our favourite way to get to the cruise terminal from the airport. In fact, Port Canaveral was the port we discovered this option and found it to be the perfect solution. As long as you don’t mind driving, possibly on the “wrong” side of the road for you, it gives you a private transfer that leaves on your schedule and can be surprisingly competitive with other transportation options.

With EnterpriseHertz, Budget, Thrifty, and Avis all having rental stations in nearby Cape Canaveral, there are plenty of options for renting a car from the airport. Expect to pay as little as $40 for a small car for less than a day.

With all the above rental companies having rental stations in the central terminal it can be an easy option to land and collect your car quickly and easily.

CRUISE COMPANY TRANSFER

Paying the cruise company to get from the airport to the ship is rarely good value, especially if more than 1 or 2 people need a transfer. You will invariably be better off using one of the alternatives above. For example, Carnival prices as of May 2019 are – MCO $35.99 – One way
