Seattle has some truly different and unique attractions to enjoy before or after your cruise, whether you want to take in views of the city from above, or explore the underground, enjoy art and sculptures or maybe ride a monorail, there are plenty of things to enjoy, and many of them won’t even cost money.

We’ve compiled ten amazing things to do before or after your cruise that should provide something for everyone to enjoy.

SMITH TOWER

The first skyscraper in Seattle and the tallest building west of the Mississippi River opened in 1914. Envisioned by an industrialist from New York, Lyman Cornelius, it now stands as an iconic symbol of Seattle, perhaps second only to the Space Needle.

One key benefit of taking in the views of the city from Smith Tower is your pictures will have the Space Needle in them!!

DON’T MISS:

  • The Space Needle.
  • Views across Puget Sound.
  • The history of Seattle’s first skyscraper.
  • Make a wish in the “Wishing Chair”.

PLAN YOUR VISIT:

  • Tickets are $19 for 13 years old and over, $15 for children 6-12 and seniors/military and free for under 5s.
  • Locals and visitors arriving after 18:00 only pay $12 to enter.
  • Open 10:00 to 23:00 Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 10:00-0:00 Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Closed Mondays.

UNDERGROUND TOUR

Explore Seattle’s neighborhood, Pioneer Square, which was “buried” when the city was raised and compare it with the modern-day Pioneer Square. Hear tales from history such as the Klondike Gold Rush and learn about Skid Row as you explore three blocks of buried history.

MAGIC MOUSE TOYS

Explore a toy shop that has been in business for nearly 50 years and makes a point of “not discriminating against adults”. WIth two floors and over 6,000 square feet of toys and games from around the world, you can easily spend an hour or two here.

  • Exploring toys from around the world.
  • Recognising old favorites to modern classics.

OLYMPIC SCULPTURE PARK

This 9 acre park is run by the Seattle Art Museum is a unique institution in the US. With permanent and temporary installations on display there is often something new to discover.

DON’T MISS:

  • Father and son, a sculpture and water feature.
  • Eagle, a towering red sculpture.
  • Perre’s Ventaglio III, the metallic square sculpture pictured.

PLAN YOUR VISIT:

  • Entry to the park is free.

  • Parking for up to two hours is $6 on weekdays and $5 on weekends.
  • Opens 30 minutes prior to sunrise and closes 30 minutes after sunset every day.

SEATTLE CENTER MONORAIL

Connecting Seattle Center to Westlake Center, the Seattle Monorail is a fun way to travel between the two. Built for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, it zips through downtown Seattle offering a fun ride and interesting views, as well as a ride on what was once seen as the future of urban transportation.

DON’T MISS:

  • Riding a monorail through the city.
  • Admiring the beautiful monorail cars.
  • The scenery as you whizz through Seattle.

PLAN YOUR VISIT:

  • One-way tickets are $2.50 for 13 years old and over, $1.25 for children 5-12 and seniors/disabled/military and free for under 5s.
  • Trains run every five to ten minutes from 07:30-23:00 on weekdays and 08:30-23:00 on weekends. Closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, alternate hours on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH

Showcasing Seattle’s involvement in the 1890’s Klondike gold rush, this National Park Service museum takes you through the history of a time when everyone thought they could dig themselves rich.

DON’T MISS:

  • Seeing real Klondike gold.
  • See how to pan for gold from 10:00-15:00 in the summer.
  • Take a walking tour of Pioneer Square.
  • Learn about the world’s last gold rush.

PLAN YOUR VISIT:

  • Entry to the museum is free.
  • Open 09:00-17:00 from Memorial Day to Labor Day and 10:00-17:00 during winter. Closes at 14:00 on Thanksgiving Eve, Chrismas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

FREMONT

The self-proclaimed “Center of the Universe”, a trip a few miles north from Seattle to Fremont is a great way to spend a few hours. Within a short distance, you can find eclectic things to see like a real military rocket, a troll living under a bridge and a statue of Lenin, not forgetting the sign that shows you the direction of other places from the “Center of the Universe”.

DON’T MISS:

  • Center of the Universe Signpost.
  • The Fremont Rocket.

STARBUCKS RESERVE ROASTERY

The ultimate Starbucks experience, the reserve roastery is a coffee lover’s paradise. Offering small-lot coffees, including some available nowhere else, as well as mixology cocktails, it is also the site of the first US location for the Princi Italian Bakery.

  • Enjoying a coffee in the city where Starbucks was born.
  • Learning about the unique history of the building.
  • Seeing the roasting process in action.
  • Try a comparative tasting of coffee from the three main coffee regions of the world.

PIKE PLACE MARKET

Established in 1907, Seattle’s Publick Markey, Pike Place Market, has been offering specialty food and allowing independent businesses to offer their wares to the public for over a hundred years.

  • Wandering the Farmer’s Market for fresh local produce.
  • Enjoying a meal at one of the many restaurants.

CHIHULY GARDEN AND GLASS

Showcasing the work of Dale Chihuly, the Chihuly Garden and Glass is an amazing intermingly of nature with brightly colored glass sculptures of all shapes and sizes.

DON’T MISS:

  • The Glasshouse, 4,500 square feet of light-filled space.
  • The Theater with videos of the glass making process.
  • The Garden, anchored by four monumental sculptures.

  • Evening tickets for entry after 18:00 are $19 for 13 years old and over, $13 for children 5-12, $17 for seniors and free for under 5s.
