It’s no surprise that so many cruise ships visit Cozumel, as the island is packed with things to do without needing to head to the mainland. From ancient Mayan ruins to the origins of chocolate and plenty of water-based attractions to cater for all tastes.

We’ve compiled ten amazing things to do during your time in port that should provide something for everyone to enjoy.

TANTUN (SAN GERVASIO) MAYAN RUINS

As our guide, Jesus informed us, the true name of these ruins is Tantun, San Gervasio is the name of the person who discovered them and then went about exploring them using dynamite! Thankfully there is plenty left to see despite his best efforts and the ruins, which were home to the goddess Ixchel, are well worth touring, especially with a great guide like we had.

DON’T MISS:

  • The Main Plaza.
  • The Arch.
  • The Iguanas, if you are fortunate enough to see one.

  • Tickets are 70 pesos for all visitors.

CHANKANAAB BEACH ADVENTURE PARK

Chankanaab which means small sea in Maya is a natural water-based theme park offering visitors the opportunity to swim with dolphins, enjoy the zip line, head out on a kayak, snorkel and much more.

  • Gliding through the air on the zip line.
  • Enjoying the water on a kayak.
  • Seeing marine life by snorkelling.

SAN MIGUEL

Just a short walk or taxi ride from your cruise ship, San Miguel is a great town to spend some time exploring, from the vibrant town square and market to just exploring a little more of the beaten track.

  • There are no entrance fees for San Miguel.

DISCOVER MEXICO PARK

Amazingly detailed scale models of Mexican monuments and buildings, a great acrobatic show and the chance to learn about the origins of chocolate all set in beautiful tropical gardens.

DON’T MISS:

STINGRAY BEACH

With a variety of activities on offer just minutes from the cruise terminals, Stingray Beach allows you to get close to stingrays, try paddleboarding and even make your own chocolate. Afterwards, relax and unwind at Ray’s Sandbar with a margarita or pina colada.

THE MAYAN CACAO COMPANY

Demonstrating how chocolate came about from the original Cacao bean packed with energy to the delicious guilty treat we know and love today. The Mayan Cacao Company is a great place to visit to learn about chocolate in a fun and interactive way.

PUNTA SUR ECO BEACH PARK

With everything from stunning coastal scenery, Mayan ruins, a great lighthouse and museum and wildlife on the land, in the air and underwater, Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is a great way to experience Cozumel.

  • The wildlife, crocodiles, iguanas and birds might be seen.
  • Mayan Ruins.
  • Faro Celarain Lighthouse.
  • The coastal scenery.
  • The colourful marine life whilst snorkelling.

PATAS & ALAS BUTTERFLY SANCTUARY

Showcasing the indigenous butterflies of Cozumel, Patas & Alas Butterfly Sanctuary is a great place to admire these beautiful insects.

EL MIRADOR

This rocky beach on the far side of the island from the port is a great place to spend some time, relax and watch as the waves crash ashore.

DON’T MISS:

  • Witnessing the waves crashing against the rugged rocks.
  • Relaxing and enjoying the ocean.
  • Climbing onto the natural arch for amazing views.

PLAN YOUR VISIT:
