Travel Goals Update: June 2015

At the beginning of the year I wrote my Travel Goals for 2015 post where I detailed what I’d like to accomplish this year. When I wrote that post I thought I’d do a check in each month to give an update on my progress and before we know it we are at the end of June and are half-way through the year already! When we’re in the midst of traveling and exploring time doesn’t seem to go that fast but sitting here at the end of June it really feels like this year is flying by and there is still so much to see yet. I can’t wait!

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, let’s look at the progress towards my travel goals for June….

Goal #1: Reach (or exceed) specific milestones for most of my Lifetime Travel Goals

Visit 3 New Countries

3 New Countries

Although I’m currently in the middle of a month long business trip in Europe and have so many countries at my fingertips that I haven’t visited yet, I actually haven’t visited any new countries this month. I’m currently in the third country of this trip but no new ones yet. :-( BUT that all changes in just three days when I head to Germany for the last stop on this trip. I’ll be visiting my company’s office in Hamburg where I will, of course, make the most of the weekends with plans to visit Lubeck, Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and Berlin. So stay tuned for July’s update when I’ll be able to mark this goal as Achieved!

Countries Visited in 2015:

France and England
While no new countries here are some of the places I have visited this month…Les Invalides in Paris, France | Le Havre, France | All Saint’s Church in Ulting, England

Visit 16 UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Definitely still the goal I’m worried isn’t actually going to be achieved this year but holy cow I’ve still seen 8 already this year and there are at least two more coming up in the next couple of weeks with our trips to Lubeck and Berlin, And maybe, just maybe, another one before the end of the year depending on where we end up after Christmas.

UNESCO Sites Visited in 2015:

Visit 3 Landmarks from my 100 Landmarks of the World List

I’ve visited a couple of landmarks again with a recent weekend get-away where I was able to show L around my beloved Paris. We visited the Arc de Triomphe and despite our feet being soooo tired, we braved the lines at the Eiffel Tower and took in the city from that amazing structure.

Coming up in July this goal will also be able to be marked as Achieved (well OVER achieved actually) as we have plans to see a couple more landmarks from the list in Berlin.

Who knew this goal would be so hard? I have done some more reading this month but it’s been books set in countries I’ve already visited- namely finishing the Diary of Anne Frank to prepare for my visit to the Anne Frank House tomorrow and our visit to Bergen-Belsen this weekend.

I may be worried about not reaching my goal of visiting 16 UNESCO sites but really I should probably be more worried about this one! I really need to make a concerted effort to focus on this one in the next six months. I have several suggestions from readers that look goods so it’s time to start requesting those at my library and get on them.

June has been another great month in terms of getting out, all thanks to the business trip I’m on that has taken me (so far) to England, France, and the Netherlands. If you want to see someone who makes the most of a business trip to get out exploring I am your gal! :-) So far I’ve been on a chocolate walking tour and visited the Churchill War Rooms in London, visited Leeds Castle in Kent, spent a weekend in Paris showing L around my favourite sites and taking in a couple of new ones, wandered around lovely Le Havre after work, and spent a very relaxing afternoon last weekend taking a cruise through the Paper Mill Locks in England. And that’s just for the portion of my trip in June. There is still lots on the agenda before I head home in a couple of weeks.

Trips Taken in 2015:

 Goal #3: Global Eats

When in England, eat as the English eat and have fish and chips, pie and mash, cream tea, and Cornish pasties. When in France, eat as the French eat and have steak tartare, escargot, and macarons. And when in the Netherlands, eat as the Dutch eat and have krokets and frikandel. The only thing I’m missing so far is some bitterballen! It’s definitely been a month of global edible treats.

Phew! Another busy month with more to come in July which is why it has been a little quiet around the blog this month. I’ve been out exploring and soaking up all the European goodness around me!

Did you set some travel goals too for 2015? How are you doing on them at this mid-year check point? Are there any you’re worried you might not accomplish?
